Team building activities

A working list for distributed teams, sorted by what they actually cost: in time, in coordination, and in goodwill.

Sort by cost before you sort by fun

Most lists of team-building activities are sorted by novelty. The useful sort is by cost, because cost is what decides whether something happens twice. An activity that needs an organiser, a calendar slot and everyone in the same hour will happen once, be described as a success, and never recur.

  1. Zero-coordination: everyone does it on their own time. Highest survival rate.
  2. Low-coordination: a shared window, no fixed hour.
  3. High-coordination: everyone at once. Save these for when they are worth it.

Zero-coordination activities that work

These need no organiser, which is the only reason they last past the first month.

  1. A daily question everyone answers in their own time, revealed together.
  2. A shared score or streak that accumulates without anyone maintaining it.
  3. A rotating prompt (one person's photo, one person's recommendation) with no obligation to respond.

When to spend the expensive kind

Real-time, everyone-at-once activities are worth it at genuine moments: a new person joining, a project shipping, a team that has not been in the same call in months. Used routinely they stop being special and start being a recurring meeting people resent.

Help improve Hearso

With your permission, we measure how you use Hearso (pages, buttons, your display name, your squad's name and your games) and record sessions and click heatmaps of how pages are used. We never send your first name, last name, email, phone number or passwords to analytics, and recordings hide them. You can change this in Settings after signing in. Hearso also keeps anonymous totals of rounds, players, and live rooms without this permission; see the player guide.
